The beginning of the school year always gives me butterflies.
Many of us are re-starting former students or beginning new. Some of us are in the developmental years of getting our kids into school or we might be taking enrichment classes for our own benefit. It's an exciting time.
With the economy, I'm hearing horror stories as to the reduced numbers enrolling in private programs.
If things are slow for you, I'd encourage you not to walk away from what you are gifted in doing. We all need you. Find another way to reach the students despite the economy. Offer reduced tuition for groups. Teach more than one student in a private lesson so they can share the tuition.
Please go to the forum and add some of your ideas so we can all benefit.

As a violin teacher in Fort Washington, Pa, I'm really focused on getting to know 'who' I am teaching...how they process information and why they are interested in what I have to offer.
May I suggest something with total humility knowing that most of you are very accomplished and excellent teachers and musicians and parents. This might even help us to develop a better relationship with our own children or family members. Sometimes one little insight can open our eyes to something we can 'tweek' that produces a vast improvement.
Hand those you are working with, both the parent and the student, a pen and piece of paper and ask them to tell you how to get to their house. No explanation.
If one writes out:
1. Go to the end of the lane and turn left.
Then you know that person is a sequential thinker and needs to be told what to do every step of the way in carefully chosen words. It doesn't mean they are better or worse learners. It means they need to know one thing at a time before you hit them with the ultimate goal.
If on the other hand, they start to draw a map with landmarks, then you know you have someone who just wants to know where they are going and a few landmarks (or mini goals) along the way.
Here is an article on my website that explains the concept in detail.

Over the next few weeks and months I'll be writing newsletters and updates on the forum, giving you little eye opening clues to what some of the multiple learning layers are that make us each such unique individuals.
My goal?
To promote excellence in music education.
Have a successful year for your students and an edifying year for you.
