Total Teacher #3
Teachers, this is a psychological review of abnormal situations you probably are confronted with each week.
I am simply bringing them to light and giving a thought about how to handle the situation keeping the best interest of the student in mind.
Being a private teacher means starting fresh every 30 minutes or so, without carrying over the aura of a lesson from one student to the next.
Family life is tough.
Getting kids from here to there is a major job and can often end up where the kids are struggling, even kids in a loving, caring family.
If a child is given enough private music lessons, someone is going the extra mile to give this gift, many times at a cost to themselves.
You are dealing with people who care and are involved.
It is the teacher's job to give support in more ways than just information and skill.
At least, that's my opinion. I'd be happy to hear yours.
The following are some of the challenges the teacher faces and maybe a thought about them.
If you are interested in the complete list, just email me.
Have you ever turned away from a student for just a second to go to a supply closet or desk only to turn around and find them shadowing you?
The smotherer
These kids can drain you if you don't establish boundaries at the beginning.
It also helps them to grow and feel security when they know what is expected of them.
Have you ever gone down to the student's level and had them snuggle up close, a bit too close?
The kids needing affection.
Teachers are being taught to stop a child from falling in front of a moving school bus without touching them...
Yet the kids really need a personal touch. What to do...
Standing with some students is like having a dark cloud hanging above.
Some kid's lives are marked with fear, anxiety and emotional withdraw.
Be the sun in the their shattered day.
Is it possible or even the job of the teacher to rescue them?
We all have dark days, yet the pressure some kids are under can become a lifestyle for them... not that they are under that much pressure, it is simply that they don't know how to handle their feelings their emotions their pimples etc.
As a teacher, you need to challenge them to excellence, give them a reason for working hard and a reward for their successes.
Sensitivity counts here.
There are lots more, the:
But since this is such a sensitive subject, I'm only going to offer my thoughts if I am asked. So if you are interested, just email and we can discuss it or sign up for the Next Teacher Seminar and get notes on all of this. Scheduled for August 2008
